Welcome to Watkins Elementary

Our History

J. B. Watkins Elementary School is named in honor of John Benjamin Watkins (1855 – 1931), founder of Watkins Nursery. Mr. Watkins was a member of the Board of Visitors and Rector of V.P.I for a number of years. He was also the Virginia State Senator from 1904 –1912 and from 1927 –1931.

Being located in a developing section of Chesterfield County, J.B. Watkins has continued to increase in student population as the area becomes more suburban. Currently, J.B. Watkins is one of the largest elementary schools in the county.

J.B. Watkins has maintained its status as a fully accredited school since 2002. We continue our commitment to academic excellence and for the last few years has been recognized as one of the Governor’s VIP Schools of Excellence.

We continue to successfully integrate Children’s Engineering and Design Technology, Mandarin Chinese, Project Based Learning and Instructional Technology into the existing curriculum.

We are the first elementary school in Virginia to win the program of Excellence Award from Virginia Technology Education Association twice in three years, and was the first school in the state to host an authentic Chinese Guest teacher as a result of a grant between Hanban (Chinese Department of Education) and the College Board.
